NEW WRITING DEVELOPMENT WEEK 2021 – SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN!

Following the success of our New Writing event in 2020, our now annual New Writing Development Week will take place in November/December 2021. We are seeking new play writing voices for inclusion in a series of performed readings, which will take place on The New Theatre stage. These new play readings will be read live by professional actors to a live audience, Covid Pandemic regulations permitting. Post reading audience engagement will be encouraged.

WHAT IS NEW WRITING DEVELOPMENT WEEK?

New Writing Development Week is an annual event held in early November in The New Theatre (TNT) Essex Street, Dublin 2.
Selected writers will get an opportunity to showcase their play in a professional environment, with a full-length performed reading by professional actors in front of an audience.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are looking for emerging and mid-career Playwrights to send us full-length scripts. Scripts must be at least 50 minutes in reading time, 45 pages minimum to 70 pages maximum in length. A 150 word descriptive synopsis and a 100 word writer’s biography should be attached with your script.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are looking for fresh voices, original ideas, and engaging themes. Historical plays will only be considered if they are significantly relevant to our time; for example, stories about people who led the way forward in the aftermath of the Spanish flu in 1918 and the struggle for Irish Independence.

WHAT WE OFFER

Selected writers will receive critical analysis feedback from our panel of dramaturgs and fellow artists.
Audience members will be encouraged to give anonymous feedback through tailored written and online feedback forms.

Should your play go forward for production in The New Theatre, the playwright will receive free dramaturgical support from TNT to further develop their script as well as free development space in which to write.

HOW TO APPLY

Please send us your script as a PDF with a synopsis and biography to TNTscripts2021@gmail.com
with the subject; ‘New Writing Week 2021’.
One email with all documents attached. PLEASE do not send us several emails.

Due to the high volume of scripts we receive, we are unable to respond or engage with the writer on every script received. Writers selected will be contacted before the announcement date.

We look forward to hearing from you and wish you every success with your submission.

This Initiative is lead funded by The Arts Council, Dublin City of literature UNESCO and Friends of The New
Theatre.
