What We Do

The New Theatre is a unique producing venue. We have a full Dramaturgical and creative team whose purpose is to continually nurture, develop and stage high standard and affordable new plays.

Our Mission

The New Theatre is committed to providing artists with a first-rate venue in the heart of Temple Bar. Our primary focus is new work and we support a varied programme of contemporary theatre, adaptations, and spoken word. We seek to give both Artists and audiences access to Irish Theatre, particularly young people who might not otherwise have access to this rich heritage.

What We Do

The New Theatre is a 68 seat theatre housed in Dublin’s old Temple bar area. Productions have been met with critical acclaim both regionally and nationally. The New Theatre supports new writing and endeavours to provide a theatre experience to those who wish to develop their artistic ability by giving them a space to create and produce in a professional setting.

We work as Ireland’s only new writing theatre venue, supporting the development of emerging and established writers.

Since 1997 The New Theatre has grown in reputation. It is associated with artistic support and creativity.

We regularly play host to festivals at The New Theatre, including Dublin Fringe Festival, and Dublin Theatre Festival, amongst others.

Each year we present a social engagement week, working closely with community arts that engages local people that tackle subjects pertaining to our society today.

Child Protection
The New Theatre is committed to providing a safe environment and a positive experience for all children with whom we interact. In accordance with guidelines outlined in “Children First, National Guidelines for the Protection and Welfare of Children”, we believe that the welfare of children is of paramount importance; thus we have created a very comprehensive Child Protection Policy.

If you wish to receive a copy of this policy, please contact The New Theatre’s Designated Liaison Person for Child Protection: leanne.thenewtheatre@gmail.com

Our Child Safeguarding Statement has been developed in line with requirements under the Children First Act 2015, the Children First: National Guidance, and Tusla’s Child Safeguarding: A Guide for Policy, Procedure and Practice.

The New Theatre actively discourages the use of single use plastic bottles.

Public Engagement Plan

The New Theatre strives to welcome a wide and diverse audience through our doors yearly, through initiatives, creative programming, local outreach in the city, and accessible ticket price points. We also engage writers from across the country and worldwide through our initiatives such as our New Play Writing Week, offering dramaturgical advice, space and time to bring scripts to full production.

We engage audiences through individual show marketing campaigns and an overall theatre marketing campaign, to attract new and returning audiences. Ticket price points are set alongside each visiting company and are priced with accessibility in mind. We target a local audience in the city and county through partnerships and regular marketing content with local radio and print organisations. Our ability to programme a wide range of shows and events, mean we are able to attract both new and returning audiences who are  looking to experience high quality new writing in the heart of the city. All of our playwriting programme participants are chosen from public calls, with guidelines that encourage a diverse range of writers with new and exciting ideas to apply.

This plan can be measured through diverse programming, growth in our audience engagement, new audiences, and crucially, new writing being platformed by a variety of writers. These stats are measured via our ticketing platform. Each production will have an individual audience target and we will provide extensive marketing support to meet these goals.

Across the year we hope to increase our audiences in the theatre, deepen our relationship with our audiences through programming choices, workshops, and post show talks, diversity our audiences through creative programming and accessible ticket pricing, and involving participants through our playwriting programmes and co-production opportunities.

We hope this plan will lead to increased numbers of audiences and writers engaging with new work, through our theatre programming, workshops, and events, across both our ticketed and free events in the theatre.
