So you work in The Arts now.
Are you making a living from your passion? Or are you constantly chasing the funding deadline? What action are you taking to ensure your work and your career are sustainable and continue to develop?
This is the challenge facing all artists, arts managers and producers today. Can you make your talent and your resources work for you?
You know you have a great idea, a brilliant vision – but without a robust plan you are never going to realise its potential. There is no one size fits all solution, but there are a range of approaches and tools that can make your work more effective. We will explore the importance of scope, budgeting, scheduling and the triple constraint of time, cost, and quality as well as some powerful software tools. Most importantly we explore the cost of doing what you do and the cost of not doing it.
“It made me realise I am not insane to do what I do… brings huge clarity to everything you CAN do to make a good career…HUGELY empowering… makes you get behind your ideas, aims and projects if they are big… I wish it was part of any artistic course ever made to be honest. What can I say? It’s f***ing genius” – Clare Dunne, Actor/Writer
I passionately believe in the right to, and the possibility of, a sustainable career for every artist. I know that many of the skills and attitudes of entrepreneurship can and will change the practice of our work and the wider arts community. “Anyone who knows John O’Brien knows that this course is a must” – Stuart Roche, Award wining writer and actor.

Where’s the Money? The Black Art of Funding
Creativity and Entrepreneurship
Sunday 28th June

For many of us Finance and Funding is a Dark Art. If we are to grow and achieve sustainability we need to understand the fundamentals of financial management and reporting -the function and purpose of budgets, cash flows, Income statements and balance sheets: how to construct them and how to read them.
We also need to know what money actually is and how it works, where to look for funding and how to ask for it. This course will explore a range of funding models and strategies, including Crowd Funding, Sponsorship and Commercial Investment models. We will explore how to present our case effectively, how to pitch and how to close a deal.
I believe that the way we fund the arts has changed and not for the better. We need to understand those changes and make them work for us in the short term, and build a better system for long term.
“…revolutionary ideas about how artists can manage and sustain their careers…a generous, passionate, innovative teacher…really keen to connect with everyone’s ideas and to help them personally. I would recommend this to anyone in any artistic walk of life.” – Christiane O’Mahony, Comedian, Actor and Playwright.
