‘I had to contend with a feeling which gradually assumed, to my dismay, the dread name of love.’
A lone figure sits at his father’s grave and contemplates the story of his own love life (naturally!). From their fortuitous meeting on the banks of the canal to their hectic living arrangements in her tiny flat, he recounts an earthy and extraordinary tale of his time with his beloved Lulu, as they briefly share a life together in a town that suspiciously resembles Dublin.
Originally written in French in 1946 Beckett was initially uneasy about publishing it as he felt much of the material was too personal. He only relented to the persuasion of his publisher and translated it into English for publication in 1973.
