“Newspapers of today are no longer tomorrow’s fish and chip paper, they’re fodder.”
This June, Idir Mná theatre company presents Quicksand, a daring new play from ZeBBie award winning writer Elizabeth Moynihan (Black Mirror, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Cider Queens, and Slaughterhouse, Swan)
Otherness and isolation are universal experiences, but ones that some experience more than others. A boundary-pushing work, Quicksand brings to life the story of a woman who will stop at nothing to protect her son from public execution via tabloid press. Loosely inspired by the McKinnon case, where a mother fought for 10 years to prevent her Autistic son from being extradited to the States for breaking into military sites on his computer, Quicksand delves into difficult questions about the media and its relationship to the justice system, through the story of a family faced with near-impossible odds.
Directed by Emily Foran (Extremities – The New Theatre, Fake ID – MAC Belfast, After the End and We Like it Here – Lyric Belfast), and starring Rex Ryan (Tonight – Abbey Theatre, Idelwild – Glass Mask) and Donna Dent (Great Expectations, The Old Curiosity Shop, All My Sons, Arcadia, Uncle Vanya and A Streetcar Named Desire), Quicksand is a challenging, insightful production that is not to be missed.
