A dying patriarch (Seamus O’Rourke) tells his story, defiant and stubborn. His son (Darragh Scannell) tells a very different story. When a mythical storyteller (Roseanne Lynch) weaves another mysterious story, their voices echo and distort creating a fractured world.

On the Way Out follows on from Vincent Woods’ critically acclaimed play, At the Black Pig’s Dyke produced by Druid Theatre Company.

This family story is told through humour and vivid characterisation, exploring loss and belonging, kinship and memory, On The Way Out tells the story of a townland on the verge of disappearance.

Vincent Woods, writer and broadcaster who is presenting the series ‘The County Measure’ on RTÉ Radio 1. His plays include ‘At the Black Pig’s Dyke’ and ‘A Cry from Heaven’ and poetry collections are ‘The Colour of Language’ and ‘Lives and Miracles’. With Eva Bourke he co-edited ‘Fermata: Writings Inspired by Music’, and with Australian poet Colleen Burke co-edited ‘The Turning Wave: Poems and Songs of Irish Australia’. Plays for radio include ‘The Gospels of Aughamore’, ‘Broken Moon’ and ‘Last Supper at the Imperial Hotel’. His work with music and musicians includes the stage shows ‘The Leitrim Equation’, ‘Open Room’ and ‘Portal’. He has written several song lyrics and the libretto for Gavin Bryars’ composition ‘Wittgenstein Fragments’ recently premiered by Louth Contemporary Music Society. Vincent is director of the Iron Mountain Literature Festival in Leitrim. He lives in Dublin and is a member of Aosdána.

John O’Hare is an experienced professional director and actor who has directed and toured productions in Ireland and Australia for over twenty years. He is the co-founder of O’Punksky’s Theatre Company which brought the premieres of many Irish plays including Tom Murphy’s ‘The Gigli Concert’, Conor McPherson’s ‘The Night Alive’, and Brian Friel’s ‘The Faith Healer’ to Australia. John directed ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ starring Cillian Murphy at Kilkenny Castle, and has toured other productions around Ireland. He is the head of acting at the Gaiety School of Acting and lives in Dublin.

Seamus O’Rourke has written, performed and toured six one-man plays since 2014 – he has a further ten plays to his name, plus a book of poems and a memoir. There’s a second memoir coming out in September. He has acted in almost every theatre, hall and flat field in Ireland.

Roseanne Lynch trained at The Samuel Beckett Centre and Drama Centre London. Theatre highlights – Enemy of the Republic; PLAY; Zandra, Queen of Jazz (Darn Skippy Productions) ; This House is Elsinore (Culture Night); Whisky Galore ( National Theatre of Scotland); and Recording Hedda ( Ibsen Stage Company). Roseanne is also a playwright and Co-Artistic Director of Darn Skippy Productions.

Darragh Scannell is a Dublin-based actor and writer, originally from Galway. He graduated from the Gaiety School of Acting’s full- time actor training programme in June 2024. He has a number of commercial, theatre and short film credits, incl stage show Wo/Mi (Smock Alley
Theatre, 2023) and short film KAI (2024). He is also a writer/poet who has performed his own work at storytelling/poetry events around Ireland. He was a finalist at the Connaught Heats for the 2023 All- Ireland Poetry Slam.
