As part of The New Theatre’s New Writing Development, we are excited to present a free reading of The Argument of Us by Colm Maher. Join us on January 31st at 7pm for this free presentation.
After years together Rhys and Bishop have separated. But they can’t quite let each other go, so they make a pact: one final confrontation, where they tell absolute truth to each other, to get to the heart of what went wrong between them. They drink all the alcohol in their apartment, forcing the argument of them, hoping to reach that beautiful moment of absolute clarity that we’ve all experienced after a legendary night of partying; when the drink has worn off, the universe aligns and everything just makes sense. In this trip into the deep recesses of their psyche they unlock the mysteries of love; they even find answers to the magic question, should they break up or stay together. But will they remember any of this the morning after? That’s the greatest trick of all, isn’t it.
Colm’s full-length play Cleaners was produced by Axis Ballymun. For the Drogheda Arts Festival he wrote The Street, a site-specific play set in Drogheda with a cast of 60 community players. He wrote the comedy/dance shows, Last Shot Redemption and Love and Other Disguises for Chrysalis/Catastrophe Theatre Company, which sold out in the International Galway Arts Festival. His short play The Killers was part of Fishamble Theatre Company’s short play season at the Project Arts Centre. For screen he has written the short film The Marriage (RTE shortcuts award) and the short film The Match for Calipo Theatre Company. A long time ago he won the Sir Peter Ustinov writing award at the international Emmy’s in New York for his script True Story.
